Being is one of the most evocative concepts in all of philosophy, and it is also one of the least understood. Like all other philosophical notions, it has multiple nuanced meanings that differ based on the particular context in which the concept is being used, and the metaphysical status of the subject matter.
Most philosophers, such as empiricists and materialists, use Being to refer to sensible or material things (or even to life itself), while idealists often conceive Being as thought or spirit. In a more abstract sense, Heidegger used Being to refer to the “motive force” that drives the development of a concept toward its own negation.
The concept of Being can be narrowed down to a single sense, in which it refers to something that is alive and real. A person, a lion, or a house are beings in this sense. Alternatively, being can be used to describe the state of being of an organism or living thing, whether it is in a state of being or not. In Taoism, Lao Tzu paired being with non-being and said that all things in the world come into existence as beings before they can be experienced as non-beings.
Being is also the object of metaphysics, which is a science after or beyond (meta) natural philosophy, which is concerned with material and changeable being. This makes it important to understand that the sense of being that is the object of metaphysics is not the same as the sense of being that is usually meant when we use the term. The metaphysician is concerned with what enjoys positive or extramental existence, and this involves the idea of essence.
